Dragonhead is the only fencing club in Brighton and Hove which caters just to young fencers.
We started in 2022 with classes for children aged 8-12 and have become a thriving club. Some of our fencers compete, some of our fencers just do classes, everyone is welcome at Dragonhead.
You can find us at the Old Boat Corner Community Centre in Brighton.
Fencing at Dragonhead has given confidence to my shy boy, setting achievable goals and teaching him that having fun is more important than winning.
Just wanted to recommend fencing on a Tuesday in Old Boat Corner for kids. Great sport and not too expensive classes with all the kit supplied. My son loves it.
About the club
Dragonhead is an inclusive epee fencing club. We believe that fencing is for everyone, and accessibility is one of our highest priorities. Although fencing is, by its nature, an individual sport, Dragonhead promotes a spirit of camaraderie and mutual support in the club. We work together, we learn together, and we cheer each other on.
We encourage our fencers to take part in competitions. We believe in the value of competition for personal experience and character building, and opportunities to practice a range of skills that you don’t generally get to work on in day-to-day life, so we try to make competition attendance as easy as possible. The club supplies a list of available competitions, and we’ll work with fencers to identify which ones are the best fit. With that being said, we never push fencers to compete if they don’t feel ready.
Child Led
Our classes are based, first and foremost, on what the children want to get from their involvement with the sport. Studies show this helps to develop the best athletes.
Training
We take a constraints-led approach to learning. This is shown to develop more autonomy for participants and help them grow skills more quickly.
Safeguarding
Inclusion and the safety of our fencers are important to us. All Coaches, Assistants and our Welfare Officer are DBS checked in line with recommended best practices.
First Aid
We make sure our environment is safe and prepare for when things go wrong. All Coaches maintain current First Aid and refresh their training every three years.
Development
Our Coaches participate in CPD to make sure we’re at the cutting edge of our sport. Coaches always attend coach education within the last 18 months.
